Although occupying the same site as the CD label (which actually does its best to plough as much money back to the bands and artists as it can), the promotion of the Dundee Music Scene is a non-profit making labour of love on my part. It isn't about making money or providing me with fame and fortune - in fact, it's not about me at all. What this is about, is trying to draw to as many people's attention as possible, the fact that Dundee is a hotbed of diverse, talented and, mostly, ultimately commercial bands and artists, 95% of which, if signed to a CD label, would sell both albums and concert seats by the shedload.
Clearly there are way more bands out there than I cover. But I try to focus on the bands that I enjoy the most - whatever style, age or appearance. All the bands of which I sing the praises, have the potential to be well received by the public at large, if only the public at large could get to know more about and hear them.
To this end, I am currently devoting as much time and energy as I can, trying to convince, local, farther afield and outside of Scotland media, that the bands here are worthy of coverage. Already, myself and Electra have done a live 2 hour radio show on Leith FM where many of the Dundee bands had airtime. Hopefully more such showcases will happen on other radio stations, in due course. The re-awakening of the excellent radio broadcast in the form of the weekly hour-long "The Weekender" on Tay FM has already led to lots more attention for the local talent that gets played on it, so there's a start - now if only they'd let me do a guest slot.....
The local newspapers in their weekly music pages (Evening Telegraph and The Courier's "Rocktalk") are concentrating ever more on local bands in their features as well as the requiste concert announcements, all of which adds to the awareness. Magazines such as IS! and Student Gossip have also turned their attentions to what's happening, so the ball is most definitely rolling.
Although I pick and choose, somewhat infrequently, the bands that I wish to put on live in concert, the Dead Earnest name in connection with live concerts is coming to signify a hot set of bands on a great night of live music, whatever the genre. But the name is used merely for familiarity and connectivity, rather than to advertise anything - and it makes our unique, if somewhat unorthodox, posters, look just that bit more like someone knows what they're doing!!
If what this site is doing, only gets just one band on a rung of the music business ladder that takes them ultimately higher, then the aim has been achieved, although we hope that it's going to be more. If, in some small way, what is happening here, is spurring bands and artists onto taking themselves more seriously and achieving their aims, then it's all been worth while.
The Dundee Music Scene is second to none right now - it must surely only be a matter of time before significant record label, media and promotor attention is showered upon it.
For now, we keep on walking............
