THE ROUTES - Don't Leave Me Hanging CD-EP

Recently debuted at Dundee's Doghouse and made quite a few friends in the process. Now comes their debut CD-EP and it reveals a title track of a distinctly Americana-laced indie songs. A vocal with a slightly gravelly bent soars into the skies complete with choruses and harmonies that provide real depth. The jangly guitar leads and jaunty drums provide the motion while the whole feel of the song is one of good-time country-rock. It's infectious in a subtle way and for all its ease, comes across as a neat slice of jangly indie-pop with a feel of the dust and the dirt. "In The City" starts with barroom piano and develops into this barrelhouse blues before spreading its wings into a real mix of country and blues song in Tractors fashion. "Standing", however, is pure John Lennon, complete with echoey vocal and its slow-motion mix of blues, psychedelia and Buddy Holly, as something right out of the Lennon songbook weaves its way into your head and really takes hold. Finally, "Stuck In A Hole" is another country-rock song complete with strung-out, anguished vocal, jaunty rhythms, strummed acoustic and singing electric guitar - I forget who did the original - but again it's totally '90's country and has a bluesy, desert heat apparoach.
