SCOTLAND LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!

BROTHERS REID-Do It Yourself CD-EP

My word!! Although the lead and title track that opens this EP only lasts just over four minutes, I lost count of the number of things that crossed my mind – for such a grand swagger of a track which veritably swings and bounces along with drive, passion, energy, fun and conviction, you'll hear shades of the seventies such as Sutherland Brothers and Stackridge, plenty of nineties “New Country”, particularly Brother Phelps, million-selling era Fleetwood Mac, touches of bluegrass, the bluesy feel of early Dr Feelgood....... the list goes on. Yet this band are the consummate heroes of putting it all together in this huge melting pot and coming up with a track that's catchy as heck, swings like a demon, is multi-textured with its use of acoustic guitars, violin, slide and electric guitars and rhythm section, vocals that are as harmonious as anything that CS&N or the Mac put together, yet delivered with way more passion and emotional bite, all driven along by a rhythm section with strength as the assoretd layers all combine to give you a song that you'll be humming for days yet want to play repeatedly. “Put The Old Dog Down” is a real hoedown of a number with more of that country-rock “New Country Americana” spliced with blues drive and contemporary bite as the song races ahead abd defies you not to leap about the place as the gritty vocal deliver an addictive rush of a song complete with chugging rhythms, swirling harmonica, swinging acoustic guitars, a brief rush of electric guitar and a well arranged, executed piece, like a cross between Lindisfarne and The Tractors. Finally, “Time For A Change” slows things down a tad for a mid-paced song full of great lead vocals and harmonies as the band prove they can deliver the goods at a more sedate but no less strong pace, or even paces, as the song strides out then drops back, the violin interweaving with upfront bass, crisply strummed acoustic and drums that possess crunch and drive, all on a song that's introspective in a forceful way. Overall, something a bit different from North East Scotland's consistently quality-filled Fat Hippy label and something that is as catchy as it is long-term enjoyable.
