LIONS CHASE TIGERS - To Their Blood CD-EP

You wouldn't have thought that an EP of such depth, strength and complexity, so sumptuously arranged, played and produced, so amazingly well written and sung, could be a thing of such beauty at the same time, but this Glasgow band has succeeded in this way on every track of this incredible CD. Things kick off with “To The Glory Of God” and, on a relatively short track, the scene is set with jangly guitar and chunky drums before this tidal wave of slowly moving bass and rhythm guitar comes upon us, as it ebbs to allow the vocalist in and here we find a rich-toned, almost nasally, impassioned voice with commanding distinction and soaring strength, the sort of voice that immediately demands and captures your attention. The band fire up as one and the lines alternate between the short “verses” and that heart-rending, inspirational hook line as the mass of guitars, bass and drums swirls and drives the song along. Then, without a pause, those dirty guitars fire up and this massive slice of riffing aided by chunky solid drums and deep pounding bass, introduce “Pictures Memories”, as it all drops back for the vocalist to unleash another high-flying, passionate sea of verses over the raging sea of instruments that's providing the backdrop. Here there's no verse-chorus distinction, but just a band delivering a statement where the song just continues to take off and the band produce a mass of guitars, drums and bass as wide as the ocean and as deep as the sea – and on it goes, tension to the point of eruption, until it all just stops. You take a breath before diving into the lurching drumming and yearning vocal that introduce “That Kid Can Sleep” and here, with just a distant keyboard riff, the mood is peaceful and sedate, the vocal still highly emotive, as a crisp acoustic guitar adds to the textural keys, and this gorgeous ballad ensues, but one where the mood is also quite dark. The guitars begion to chime, the rhythms move up a notch as the vocals are far distant, almost church-like, only for the lead vocal to add to the effect as the drums begin to march, the intensity starts to rise, the guitars start to burn and the bass provides the foundations, the song almost like a massive indie peal of church bells as the lyrics are repeated mantra-fashion, only for it all to drop back to earth and end with a lone, plaintif vocal. “Bodies Are Where You Find Them” is more of an anthem but a slow one as the vocals really come right upfront to deliver a heartfelt lyric with absolute conviction and passion as the sound of restrained guitars and deep bass provide a sparse backing. Then the vocalist stops, the drums lurch in, almost distant, a riff of a guitar adds to the chiming lead, then the lead vocal returns only for this huge-sounding counterpoint backing of harmony vocals to provide a mighty vocal depth and an amazing emotion to the track, before it all ends as quietly as it began. “Every Light Will Fade” carries on where the last track left, only here the harmony vocal weave a spell over delightlful backing from bell-like percussion, crisp, slowly moving acoustic guitars as that mesmerising voice completely hooks you in and the song slowly unfolds to glorious degree, the level of passion allied to the dark, deep, beauty of the piece, providing one of the most unusual but absorbing acoustic indie ballads you'll find anywhere, a thing of magic, a track that carries you along with it, and a track that is so uplifting and yet, at the same time, could have you in tears by virtue of its emotional singing, its well written love-lost lyrics and the whole feel of the song courtesy of an amazing performance from singer and band. The CD ends with “To Their Blood”, a fitting end that sees things out with all the energy, passion, emotion, strength and restrained fire that this band has employed throughout this EP, another uplifting anthem of a track, sung with such purpose and belief, that distinctive vocal now fastened to your heart and soul for life, as the band unleash another mix of jangly guitar appeal, slowly riffing density, slowly muscular rhythm section, all ultimately to lift off in a blaze of glory as the song rises to a crescendo and takes you to another universe altogether, ending with the silent wind that began it all, as breathtaking a full stop as they come. In short, stunning – an EP you have to hear – it will enrich your life – and then some!!
