DUNDEE LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!

GRACE EMILYS - Lip[stick Blues CD Single

Professionally recorded and sounding just stunning, this is the first widely available CD from Dundee's most off-the-wall commercial indie band that is Grace Emilys. The title track drives ahead from the start in what's essentially an accelerated chug of rattling drums, deep bass, chiming electric mandolin, fast strummed acoustic guitar and provides a really neat mix of muscular and magic. Above this a lead vocal delivers the fascinating lyrics with a conviction that is spellbinding, a certain bite to the voice adding to the effect. But that they multi-track it at times, that they twist and turn the arrangement while still maintaining the feel that makes it such a steaming example of commercial indie-rolk-rock, all adds to the effect and, when it briefly drops back to reveal multi-part harmony vocals, then the mandolin and rhythm section chug back into life as the song drives to its conclusion, just puts the icing on the cake of what is a truly commercial sounding song that deserves to be heard on radios up and down the land. But if this track is the commercial side of the band, then the second track, “Still Getting Older”, is the absolute epitome of what makes the Emilys such a special and magical band. The song features so many parts to it yet it flows seamlessly as the arrangements meander and flow, initially built on solid rhythm section and chiming, ringing guitar riff sets sail below folk-rock vocals before the whole thing just erupts into life with a searing lead guitar that delivers this cyclical lead break that sticks in your head before the next lead vocal delivers the meat of the song, the presence of the harmonies at the back providing this expanse that is simply amazing. Then the band drops back as the chorus comes in over just a drum beat ans a sole lead guitar, an effect that shouldn't work but in their hands, works a treat, as it powers up into a four-part chorus over guitars and rhythms. If all this wasn't enough, amid the chiming guitars and mid-paced solid rhythms, they go into a portion of the song where the lyric is actually recited, again something that you'd think would be awfully cliched, yet in the hands of this band, sounds so natural in the context of the song as that then goes into this lurching beat and ringing guitar as another vocalist delivers the verse before they then go into a completely different hook line from the one you've just had. To put the icing on the cake, you then get an instrumental break where the guitar chimes out before that then goes into this sea of harmonies where the vocalists are all doing different parts, the entire arrangement performed and produced perfectly so that you hear every individual part yet it all fits together with jigsaw-like precision as it all suddenly drops and the song ends on a final distant burst of guitar – absolute genius!! It may only be two track, but they're both superb – one solidly indie yet vibrantly commercial and a fine song as well, the other, something that is pure Grace Emilys, totally impressive and so naturally flowing in its complexity, it takes your breath away.
