EMERGENZA BATTLE OF THE BANDS - Carling Academy, Glasgow 18-06-06 + 25-06-06
I'm not at all sure if I should admit to this (gawd!!! I feel like I'm about to tell you some dark and tawdry secret!), but there's 34 bands out there who know anyway, so it's hardly the best kept secret in the world - yes, I admit it - I was a judge at the Scottish Battle of the Bands finals in Glasgow - one of several at each event I'll have you know, so no poison pen letters please!!
Story is that I was asked to do it. Probably 'coz I'm bloody good at reviewing concerts -although maybe they just felt I should get out more! Either way, I said "yes" without knowing what I was getting into. Which is why, when I got there and a form was handed to me with spaces to write reviews and comments for 17 bands (yes, 17!!), I realised why they wanted me there for 4.30pm - and why it went on till 11.30pm!! I've reviewed bands for ages - but never as it was happening before and never 7 practically continuous hours of them. But, as it turned out, it was a combination of easy and enjoyable - and the best thing is that it's all fair play too - very democratic - and you can't argue with that! (well, I guess 32 bands and their followers just might have a go, but what the heck - it's always rock 'n' roll)
As a mark of my considerable talents - or the fact that I'm a complete raving nutter - I not only made the notes and comments for the official forms but also wrote my own notes, too, for the purposes of doing a review of the concerts here - and so, if you want a summary of what's out there in the land of the band, here's where the story starts............
