THE ELVIS SUICIDE - Surveying The Young Professionals CD-EP

A raucous slice of adrenaline-fuelled punk rage with enough guitar firepower to take on a small army is what introduces you to the world of this Glasgow band on the opening track of their debut EP. The track is only just over a minute or so long but it's effective with pinpoint accuracy. “If I Don't Run” is slightly less intense but no less roaring although the greater use of dynamics in the fact that there's a recognisable chorus, gives it more variation – but it's still only a minute or so long and that's just fine. “Ray Milland” is fast, energetic, a football terrace anthem that accelerates Bo Diddley to about 500 mph and as the rhythm section drives and the guitars scorch, the vocals are shouted and sung with conviction. Finally, “When I'm Gone” shows that the band do have a tenders side as an acoustic ballad warms your bluesy heart with raw emotion. On this evidence, you just know that this band have much more to offer – and they fulfilled this on the album that followed – so head on to that review for the sequel.........
