DELIMSERGE - BLOOD MONEY E.P.

Hailing from Perth, they recently came second in a local Battle Of The Bands contest and now present their first demo EP. The title track kicks things off and there's a decided Slipknot quality to it as parts of it reminded me a bit of "Left Behind" and they also possess the dynamics of that band next to the raging intensity that is also a definite requirement. But, amid all the guitar blitz, rhythmic thunder and hollering vocal growls, there's a soaring, surging song spiralling out which is what makes you think that this band can really cut it, and as a five minute track goes, it works a treat. The five minute "Addiction" begins with a sea of rolling guitar riffs and lurching rhythms as the guitar then powers up, the rhythm section surges ahead and the whole thing takes off with the growled vocal right upfront, and even lyrically audible, which is all too rare for this sort of music, the vocalist exercising his entire range of growling and squealing to dramatic effect as the song twists and turns its energised hardcore way to hell. As hardcore goes, its certainly got the rage that's required, with some inventive arranging, and does indeed hold its head above the overcrowded waters of this genre of music, really well. The final song, "Darkened Temple', starts more sedately with chiming guitar, crashing cymbals and deep bass before the drums rumble the guitars shards fly off at all angles and the bass thunders, then, in a hail of guitar chords, the whole thing surges ahead once more, this time the rhythms a mix of choppy and raging, while the guitar work roars up and down the mix as the vocals threaten to explode. Sometimes almost too choppy for its own good, the track works but doesn't have quite the same addictive quality as the previous two - a good first step.
