SCOTLAND LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!

ACRYLIC IQON - Gentlemen, We Can Rebuild Him CD-EP

What ya just gotta love about the three tracks from the new Glasgow pop-punk band, is the way they manage to inject so much into such a relativelt small space without sacrificing any of the power, passion, precision and purity of writing, playing and arranging, that this band exude by the truckload. Things begin with “Adventurous” as a quite sea of chiming guitar chords is suddenly interrupted by a veritable blast of rifle-fire rhythms from the bass and drums, storming guitar riffing, as the hihg-register female vocals emerge to provide a slice of gorgeousness to a track that's now dropped back for the verses, only to fire up another head of steam for the chorus that takes off like a rocket, the overall effect being of adrenaline-rousing, eye-widening, joyously heart-warming musical fun. The song strides out into a whirlwind of steaming heat guitar riffing, fast-paced choppy drumming, high-flying girlie choruses, male vocal to add a touch of colour and an arrangement that rises and falls from whisper to rousing choruses on a song that's tight, involved, twisting, turning, dynamic and, above all, immensely memorable. The title track follows and pursues a similar path, only here the guitar possesses a smoking heat as the more urgent, angst-ridden, powerful female vocal provides a verse with purpose and determination, confidence and conviction, delivering choppy verses and high-flying choruses with a shining sense of drive and determination, a red hot guitar break putting the bite into the cake, as the bass moves upfront, teeming rolls along, the Avril Lavigne-styled vocals head skywards once again and this awesome slice of commercially viable, serious listening immensely enjoyable slice of contemporary pop-punk songwriting, takes hold and refuses to let go. Finally, there's “Techno Garage” (which isn't!!!) although it does add a kind of theremin-like synth wail to the proceedings, this time the Avril Lavigne-esque vocal really biting amid dirty guitar riffs, slightly out of tune male vocals and high-flying female vocals, all combine to perfection as the bass then leads the song into an extended, stinging, red hot guitar break before heading back to the main body of the song for a rousing finale of combined male and female vocals that take the song into a flaming solar flare of a dimension. Overall, this is stunning – the sort of songs you can play any time and they'll make you feel great.
