- Breathe
So, when presented with thisCD of just three of their own songs, it was understandable that I should be nervous - will it sound good? wil it to justice to the band? will the songs stand up? will Zara's vocals really be THAT good?
Needn't have worried!! The three songs convey the whole spirit of what makes this a band destined for greatness. The opening track, "Breathe" starts with chiming guitars, lilting bass and then the chunky drum beat comes in as Zara#s lead vocal enters and, right from the off, sounds so strong and yet has a quality that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck at the same time, the arrangement of the song both strident and tender, the lyrics so gorgeous - a song and a vocal that can move mountains and melt your heart at the same time. Just wonderful!!
"Gotta Let Me Know' begins with vocal and acoustic guitar as a yearning vocal lets the lyrics convey the passion of the emotions that the song tells, the chiming guitars, solid but fluid bass work and gently driving drums and cymbals backing the song as Zara's vocal builds to a soaring finale, a song that improves with every play.
"Coming Around Again" is tender, passionate, strong and anthemic, the sort of song that is so addictive that it stays in your head long after it's gone, but you simply never tire of hearing it. Here the rhythm section drive a little harder, the guitars chiming away on top, and the vocals just sailing into the skies effortlessly, so strong and yet conveying so much emotion, as you rise up with it and let it capture your heart and minds, as the instrumental finale puts the icing on the cake.
It's not folk or country or Americana, yet it would appeal to anyone into any of those styles. In essence, like Tracy Chapman and many others before and since, this defies category - it is just a wonderful set of songs perfectly written, sung and delivered, dripping with emotion, strength and enjoyment. You simply have to hear this band - they are just sensational.
